Professor Gan obtained her undergraduate degree in pharmacy from Manchester University, England and subsequent higher qualifications (M. Pharm and PhD) from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Her specialisations include pharmacogenetics, toxicology and natural products.

Prof Gan is a prolific writer and has published > 200 papers in international peer-reviewed journals. She is also an editor for several journals including PlosOne journal and Evidenced-Base Complementary Alternative Medicine. She has garnered several awards such as “Top Referee of the year Award” (from Elsevier) and the “Most cited paper award” from the J Food Science (Wiley-Blackwell). She is also the recipient of Best Pre-clinical Lecturer, Quality Publication and Excellent Researcher Awards from USM for several years.

Prof Gan is a passionate writer. She has published many books and book chapters (in both Bahasa Malaysia and English) in Springer, Elsevier, Wiley-Blackwell, MPH publishers, Kanyin, Zi Publishers, Penerbit USM and Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka. She has been conducting Scientific Writing workshops for several institutions in Malaysia in the past 10 years. In 2017, her workshop has gone outside Malaysia for the first time when it was conducted in Belgaum, India.
